Older adults with type 2 diabetes who received metformin had significantly slower decline in global cognition and executive functioning, as well as significantly reduced odds of incident dementia, compared with those who weren't given metformin, according to a study in Diabetes Care. "Randomized controlled studies are required to determine whether metformin may have a protective effect against dementia or cognitive decline, both in people with diabetes, and given metformin's long safety record, older people without diabetes," researchers wrote.
