A pilot study conducted in the emergency department of a large urban medical center and presented at the American College of Emergency Physicians 2019 Scientific Assembly found that using photo IDs for patients on their EHRs significantly reduced medication errors. "Other groups have implemented strategies to reduce wrong-patient errors that have involved interruptive solutions," such as alerts, but adding a photo "is noninterruptive yet significantly effective," the researchers said.
