Pediatric patients with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia in complete remission before undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant had a two-year probable overall survival of 0.91 after receiving total body irradiation plus etoposide, compared with 0.75 among those who had chemotherapy conditioning. The findings in the Journal of Clinical Oncology also showed that "for now, total body irradiation-based regimens are the best way to cure patients requiring [HSCT]," Dr. Michael Pulsipher wrote in an accompanying editorial.
