Despite their increasing popularity and implementation, EMRs aren't likely to replace imaging IT software anytime soon because of the complexity involved with radiology, the rise of standalone operational and workflow products geared to radiologists, and the continuing evolution of enterprise imaging strategies, writes Steve Holloway, company analyst and lead director of the UK-based health and market intelligence firm Signify Research. "[N]o EMR vendor today can handle the complexity and specialty requirements of modern radiology within its EMR offering," Holloway writes, adding that health care providers should instead look for "a central diagnostic imaging IT specialist that can support it in embracing an enterprise imaging strategy."
