Reinsurance programs cut premiums, save government $1B, study finds

An Avalere Health study found state-run reinsurance programs saved the federal government around $1 billion in subsidies and reduced premiums by an average of nearly 20% during the first year of implementation. Speaking at the America's Health Insurance Plans' National Policy Conference, Rep. Frank Pallone, D-N.J., said Democrats would like to see a federal reinsurance program to facilitate greater competition in the individual insurance market.
