Antidepressants are the fourth most prescribed medications for pain in the US, and a study published in the British Medical Journal found little benefit for their use for those with musculoskeletal pain. "Our findings show there's little justification for recommending antidepressants for people with back pain at the moment, and for sciatica and osteoarthritis, while these medications may be effective, guidelines should emphasize that the current evidence is uncertain," said study investigator Giovanni E. Ferreira, PhD.
