A study published in Nature Communications describes how Japanese researchers were able to separate the oxygen molecules O-18 and O-16 using nanoporous carbon. O-18, an essential isotope in PET scans, is difficult to obtain so the researchers believe there will be a greater demand for this process and distilled 0-18 in the future.
