DAT SPECT shows promise in measuring Parkinson's disease severity

Japanese researchers found that dopamine transporter SPECT-derived striatal specific binding ratio in the brain's substantia nigra pars compacta had a higher receiver operating characteristic area under the curve in distinguishing individuals with early-stage Parkinson's disease from those with advanced stage Parkinson's, compared with neuromelanin MRI-derived signal-to-noise ratio in the SNpc. The findings in the American Journal of Roentgenology "are consistent with the results of previous studies indicating that DAT SPECT provides a quantitative biomarker for the severity of nigrostriatal dopaminergic degeneration in PD," researchers wrote.
