Annual US alcohol-related deaths among people ages 16 and older increased from 35,914 in 1999 to 72,558 in 2017, researchers reported in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research. The most common cause was liver disease and women had a greater increase in alcohol-related deaths than men.
