The health care sector experienced 172 individual ransomware attacks between 2016 and 2019, affecting 6.6 million patients and costing a total of $157 million, according to a report from Comparitech. Seventy-four percent of the attacks targeted hospitals or health clinics, with the highest number of attacks occurring in California and Texas.
