Emergency department doctors are writing fewer opioid prescriptions for pain and recommending alternatives that include physical therapy, according to a study by the National Center for Health Statistics. The number of opioid prescriptions dropped to 14% in 2016 and 2017 after hovering around 20% for about 10 years.
