Study finds high costs associated with NAFLD diagnosis, management

The average annual cost of care for newly diagnosed nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is $7,804 and is $3,789 for long-term management for patients with commercial insurance, covering liver biopsies, imaging and hospitalization, according to a study published in Hepatology. In comparison, annual costs were $2,298 in matched patients without NAFLD but with similar comorbidities, and researchers suggested that underlying determinants of use and sources of excess cost be identified and addressed.
