Study examines link between depression, IBD

Patients who had gastrointestinal symptoms before developing depression may be at higher risk for inflammatory bowel disease, compared with those who did not have depression, according to a study in the journal Gut. "This indicates the apparent association between prior depression and subsequent IBD potentially represents reverse causation, whereby symptoms of IBD result in depression rather than the other way around," according to researchers led by Richard C. Pollok, of St. George's University Hospitals in the UK.
