Hospitals put more emphasis on ASCs in 2020

US hospitals in 2020 bought and opened more ambulatory surgical centers, driven in part by the COVID-19 pandemic and a push by commercial payers to move outpatient procedures to less expensive care venues. Hospitals, which needed space for COVID-19 and emergency care as the pandemic surged, also sent more cases to outpatient settings, while the CMS made more procedures performed at ASCs eligible for Medicare reimbursement.
