White House Coronavirus Task Force coordinator Deborah Birx urged Americans to stay vigilant and continue wearing masks and practicing hand hygiene and social distancing as the US logged 185,759 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the highest single-day spike since the pandemic started, bringing the nationwide tally to at least 11.6 million cases and over 252,000 fatalities. Hospitalizations also hit record levels, with 79,410 Americans currently hospitalized with the disease, and 44 states recorded at least a 10% increase in new cases compared with the previous week.
