The US recorded around 45,400 new COVID-19 cases Monday, the second consecutive day the figure came in under 50,000, bringing the total number of infections to 4.75 million and deaths to 156,200 since the pandemic began, according to Johns Hopkins University. Globally, the disease has killed more than 700,000 people, which equates to almost 5,900 fatalities every 24 hours and 247 deaths per hour on average over the past two weeks.
