A new report by a group of archaeological experts asserts that human activity had already created significant changes in the planet thousands of years ago. The paper could mark a step toward a more complete understanding of global change. "There has never been a real effort to put together an empirical global land-use history," said Erle Ellis, a University of Maryland, Baltimore County geographer and environmental scientist.
