Israel recently threatened to reduce the water resources it shares with Jordan after King Abdullah II said Israeli farmers would not be allowed to lease land in a region known as the Island of Peace. Governments are willing to discuss water issues even "when they won't talk about anything else," but disputes over water can also "exacerbate existing tensions," noted Aaron Wolf, an Oregon State University geography professor.
