Sand and gravel are in high demand for construction worldwide, but mining to obtain sand is posing a danger to river deltas, coastlines and the environment, according to a new United Nations report. Flooding and drought are also growing more common as sand demand has grown by a factor of three over the past 20 years, the report says.
