Heavy rain from hurricanes poses an increasing risk of flooding industrial sites along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, raising the possibility of toxic chemicals being released. The Union of Concerned Scientists said in a July report that about 1,000 Superfund sites along the coasts face a serious threat of coastal flooding.
