Statistics that attempt to provide a single measure of density for an entire city can be misleading, because they may overlook significant variation across the urban area, writes geographer Garrett Dash Nelson. He shares a visualization he created and notes that looking at population on a grid scale "forces us to think about what we really mean when we talk about dense urban life."
