How people decide whether to evacuate from a hurricane

As Hurricane Florence threatens the East Coast of the US, some residents have decided to stay in place. Several factors -- including the difficulty of evacuating and confusion about evacuation zones -- may influence the decision. In some cases, people may have "misconceptions about how severely they could be affected by a certain type of storm because they haven't experienced the worst of that type of storm," says Jay Baker, a retired Florida State University geography professor.
