A volcano erupted on Antarctica's Deception Island over 4,300 years later than previously thought, creating a depression 8 to 10 kilometers in diameter, reports the Spanish National Research Council. Researchers studied lake sediment cores to determine that the eruption occurred 3,980 years ago and ejected between 30 and 60 cubic kilometers of ash.
