If countries don't make a concerted effort to fight global warming, Earth could reach a dangerous threshold and enter a "hothouse" state where it would heat up instead of cooling itself, according to a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Scientists aren't precisely sure what that threshold may be, but they suggest it could be as little as 2 degrees Celsius higher than preindustrial levels.
