Cold War images show farming's effects on animals in Kazakhstan

Researchers have used images taken by US satellites during the Cold War to document how human activity has led to changes in the burrows used by bobak marmot populations in Kazakhstan. Geographer Catalina Munteanu of Humboldt University of Berlin noted that the technique could also be applied to termite mounds, beaver dams and other structures.
