Artificial volcanic eruptions could help cool planet, researchers say

Scientists designed a model showing how an artificial duplication of volcanic eruptions -- which send sun-shielding particles into the atmosphere -- could lower Earth's temperatures. "Even if we hope these approaches won't ever have to be used, it is really important that we understand them because someday they might be needed to help alleviate suffering," says Ken Caldeira, a researcher with the Carnegie Institution for Science.
