Animal testing helps ensure safety of COVID-19 vaccines

Potential COVID-19 vaccines are being studied in mice, ferrets and monkeys because researchers need to perform autopsies to understand how the body reacts to the vaccine, says Kate Broderick, head of research at Inovio Pharmaceuticals. Different types of vaccines for COVID-19 have shown efficacy in three monkey studies, and none of the vaccines made the disease worse, which sometimes happens.
