Lice infestations can cause serious illness in cows and cattle in winter, writes veterinarian Meredyth Jones, an associate professor in the food animal medicine section at Oklahoma State University's Veterinary Medical Hospital. Excessive licking or rubbing on buildings or fence posts is an early indication of an infestation, and all animals in a herd need to be treated to eradicate the pests, Dr. Jones writes.
