A genetic test for African swine fever virus returns accurate results in a few hours, according to the Department of Homeland Security, and could be an important containment tool if ASFV is found in the US, says John Neilan, science director in DHS' science and technology division. The test can be used on live animals and raw pork and is available abroad but must be approved by the USDA before being used in the US.
