Spring is a good time to ensure pets are microchipped, brush out winter coats and check for skin lesions, and clean up yards to prevent parasitic infections, writes veterinarian Heidi Bassler. Make sure dogs' nails are trimmed, and increase exercise intensity gradually, Dr. Bassler advises, and if swimming in a pool is an option, make sure the dog knows how to get out of the pool on its own.
