Elective declawing, or onychectomy, is discouraged, but decisions about the procedure should be made by veterinarians and take into account the best interest of the client and patient, according to an updated policy statement from the AVMA House of Delegates. Veterinarians should educate clients about alternatives to elective, nontherapeutic declawing and must use multimodal perioperative pain management when performing onychectomy.
