Worldwide, 35% of pet owners surveyed said they either do or would consider feeding their pets a vegan diet, and 27% of pet owners who follow a vegan diet themselves do not feed their pets animal-derived foods, researchers reported in PLOS ONE. As the human health and environmental implications of plant-based diets gain attention, more people are likely to want to reduce the amount of meat they feed their pets, but more research is needed on the nutritional aspects of plant-based pet diets, says veterinarian Sarah Dodd, the study's lead author.
