Species may diversify in response to environmental events

Researchers who sequenced genes of various cichlid fish species demonstrated that hybridization between local and colonizer species accelerates specialization and triggers speciation. Cichlids have diversified concurrently with major geological events such as a continental split and a sinking valley, the researchers reported in Nature Communications, and the findings might improve understanding of animals' changes due to climate change.
