A common dolphin found in the Mill River in Gloucester, Mass., in January had a fluke worm infection and brain hemorrhage, New Hampshire Veterinary Diagnostic Lab senior veterinary pathologist Inga Sidor said in a news release. Marine mammals are sentinels of ecosystem health, and diseases can jump from wild animals to domestic animals and people, so surveillance of both live and dead marine mammals is important, Dr. Sidor said.
