Veterinarians increasingly recommend physical therapy after or as an alternative to surgery, to manage orthopedic conditions and degenerative diseases or to stimulate elderly pets' brains. Veterinary colleges like the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine are adding more physical rehabilitation courses to their curricula and opening rehabilitation centers that include underwater treadmills, swimming pools, hyperbaric oxygen chambers and exercise areas.
