A strain of Hendra virus detected in samples taken from gray-headed flying foxes in 2013 is 99% identical to a strain found in a horse that died in 2015 in southern Australia, and researchers working on the Horses as Sentinels project say HeV infection should be considered as a differential diagnosis in unvaccinated horses in areas of Australia where the bats are present. The team said horse owners, handlers and veterinarians should take preventive measures including vaccination, use of personal protective equipment and good hygiene.
