Any close encounter between a dog and a skunk is a possible rabies exposure, and a dog that hasn't been vaccinated can easily transmit the virus to people, writes veterinarian Russ Daly, extension veterinarian at South Dakota State University. A booster shot and a watchful eye are all a properly vaccinated dog needs after potential exposure to rabies, while exposure means a four-month confinement in a kennel or -- more likely -- euthanasia for an unvaccinated dog, Dr. Daly writes.
