Keeping pets vaccinated against rabies is the single best way to prevent transmission, says veterinarian Gary Brummet with the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Bats are the primary reservoirs in the US, but skunks, foxes, raccoons and coyotes are also important sources, and Dr. Brummet says people and their pets should stay away from any wild animal, especially one that is acting strangely.
