Coccidioides fungi that grow in the dirt in Arizona and in California's San Joaquin Valley can cause valley fever when inhaled, resulting in coughing, fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and weight loss. Veterinarian Jennifer Wilcox advises keeping pets away from areas where the soil has been disturbed, such as construction zones, and seeking veterinary care immediately when signs appear.
