Only about 13% of dog owners and a third of cat owners responding to an international survey said they feed their pet conventional pet foods only, and more than two-thirds of dogs and 50% of cats get homemade meals at least occasionally. Veterinarian Sarah Dodd, who led the study, says raw foods present a significant risk of bacterial infections to pets and people, and the AVMA discourages feeding animals anything that hasn't been heat-treated or pasteurized to kill pathogens.
