Tasmanian devil facial tumor disease DFT1 split into five sublineages between 2003 and 2018, two of which went extinct and three of which spread, with one splitting yet again, researchers reported in PLOS Biology. The researchers found multiple unstable regions in the DFT1 genome but say the degree of genomic diversity in tumors is lower than that of cancerous tumors that affect people.
