Canine and feline obesity should be formally recognized as a disease, defined as 30% above ideal weight, and a standard obesity scale should be adopted, according to a position statement from the Global Pet Obesity Initiative endorsed by the AVMA board of directors. The AVMA offers members a toolkit for addressing obesity in dogs, cats and horses that includes client questionnaires, resources for veterinary staff, examples of pledges for clients to help their pets, and templates and tips for veterinary staff communications.
