Before traveling with a pet, animals' microchips, identification tags and veterinary contact information should be updated, says AVMA President Dr. Douglas Kratt. Pets need frequent breaks and access to ample water and shade, and they should never be left alone in a vehicle, even for a short period of time, Dr. Kratt says.
