An Alaskan brown bear known as 409 Beadnose had two cubs in 2016 that stayed with her last year, but the bear "emancipated" the cubs and emerged from her den cub-free this year with no obligation to share the salmon she caught in Katmai National Park and Preserve's Brooks River. As a result, 409 Beadnose is so well prepared for hibernation, she was crowned Katmai's fattest bear in the preserve's fourth annual Fat Bear Week contest.
