Equine herpesvirus-1 was confirmed in a horse in Lincoln County, S.D., that had participated in cutting and sorting events throughout the state recently and developed neurologic symptoms. State veterinarian Dustin Oedekoven says risk of EHV-1 transmission can be reduced with strong biosecurity practices and suggests that equine event organizers work with veterinary professionals to develop prevention protocols.
