A Fiordland penguin that swam 1,500 miles from New Zealand to Australia spent the summer recuperating from its ordeal at Melbourne Zoo and was released last month at a nearby beach. The penguin arrived emaciated and exhausted, and zoo staff gave it fluids and vitamins, gradually introduced food, and gave it swimming lessons to build muscle, says the zoo's head of veterinary services, veterinarian Michael Lynch.
