All dogs and cats in Indiana are at risk for heartworms, but a variety of preventive medications are available, says Noah's at Wheaton practice manager Tom Dock. Heartworms cause coughing, liver damage, anemia, accumulation of fluid on the abdomen or chest, and death, but many dogs that test positive display no obvious signs of illness, Dock says.
