After sustained advocacy from the AVMA, Congress has reintroduced legislation that would help address student debt and rural veterinary shortages. The Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program Enhancement Act would expand a program that provides up to $25,000 a year in student loan repayments to food animal and public health veterinarians who serve at least three years in a rural area identified with a veterinary shortage. The bill would enable the existing VMLRP to help more communities by eliminating a burdensome tax on the loan repayment awards.
