Hay lacks adequate nutrition to support bovine health, and cattle that eat only hay in winter can die of starvation, says ruminant veterinarian Michelle Arnold. The body condition of cattle exposed to extreme cold lately should be checked, hay should be tested for nutritional value, diets should be supplemented as appropriate using tools like the University of Kentucky's Beef Cow Forage Supplement Tool, and feed stations should be rotated to keep cows out of deep mud, Dr. Arnold says.
