The Eastern hellbender salamander -- also known as the snot otter, devil dog, Allegheny alligator and lasagna lizard -- was named Pennsylvania's state amphibian based on a suggestion by students who had studied ways to clean up the Chesapeake Bay. Other seemingly obscure animals to be honored by states include the American paddlefish in Missouri and the tarantula hawk in New Mexico.
